The story of Felix Mendelssohn's unearthing of Bach's Magnum Opus led to a rediscovery of the all-but-forgotten old master is intriguing and fascinating. It involves one of the most remarkable women of this period, Mendelssohn's great-aunt, Sarah Itzig Levy (1761-1854) the prominent Berliner keyboardist, music collector and patron. This lecture will explore the remarkable Itzig and Mendelssohn families and their remarkable achievement and debunks some major myths along the way.
