The Bucks County Choral Society seeks a Managing Director to provide administrative leadership to the Choral Society volunteers and staff in support of the Artistic Director’s vision for the organization. The Managing Director primarily leads, oversees, implements, and ensures the sustainability of Choral Society’s operations through fundraising strategy, marketing, administration, and financial management. She/he/they is the chief operating officer and works directly with the Board of Directors and Choir Council.
On the cusp of celebrating its 50th anniversary season in 2022-2023, the Choral Society seeks a creative, motivated partner to help develop strategies and realize goals for long-term sustainability, heightened visibility, and increased audience and donor engagement.
The Managing Director implements the creative vision of the Choral Society’s Artistic Director at the direction of the Board of Directors. She/he/they will work to ensure operational integrity, and to devise strategy and initiatives for organizational advancement and sustainability. The Managing Director primarily leads, oversees, implements, and ensures the sustainability of the Choral Society’s operations through fundraising strategy, marketing, administration, and financial management. She/he/they are the chief operating officer and works directly with the Board of Directors and Choir Council. The Managing Director helps to advance the relationship between the Choral Society and various local, regional and national organizations, including government agencies and advocacy groups, community and local business groups, foundations and arts organizations, including potential collaborating partners. The Managing Director/Artistic Director team presents the public face of the Choral Society and may be called upon to speak to private and public organizations and to the press. This position—like the Artistic Director—reports to the Board and is part-time.
- Strong leadership skills, warm demeanor, and keen strategic thinking
- Proven success as a fundraiser in the non-profit arena with a focus on individual giving, arts experience preferred.
- Awareness of current trends in arts marketing and experience with and ability to visualize, communicate and articulate all marketing communications functions including e-marketing, social media, advertising, public relations, and collateral
- Superb and compelling oral and written communication skills
- Goal-oriented approach and expertise in working with Boards and other volunteers to track organizational/ operational successes
- Experience working with budgets and databases; excellent reporting skills
- A passion for the arts, and especially choral music

ABOUT BUCKS COUNTY CHORAL SOCIETY
The Bucks County Choral Society was founded in 1973 by a small group of singers answering an ad in a local paper. Today, under Dr. Lloyd’s leadership as Artistic Director, the Choral Society has become widely recognized as the area’s premier large choral ensemble, singing an extensive repertoire of music ranging from classical to contemporary, including major works with orchestra, opera and musical theater, African American spirituals and sacred jazz. The 100-voice auditioned choir performs a series of four concert programs annually, currently at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Doylestown. Several special commissions have been done through the years, including works by Robert Maggio, Jay Fluellen, Ricky Ian Gordon, and Richard Wargo. Dr. Lloyd is active as a conductor, composer, and singer. His choral theater work, Bonhoeffer, recorded by The Crossing Choir, received a Grammy nomination in 2017. The Choral Society has collaborated with a number of groups and organizations, such as Symphony in C, Riverside Symphonia, and Tempesta di Mare, as well as area soloists such as DeVonne Gardner (an original soloist with Duke Ellington), opera singers Suzanne DuPlantis, Misoon Ghim, Randall Scarlata, Jason Switzer, and Keith Phares, and music theater performers Jennie Eisenhower and Ben Dibble. Cross cultural collaborations are also numerous include the Heritage Chorale, the Philadelphia Master Chorale and the Philadelphia Community Mass Choir. Audiences for the Choral Society come from length of the county, with close to 50% coming from the Central Bucks area, and another 25% come from communities outside of Bucks County, including New Jersey.
In addition to the Choral Society’s annual concert series, the organization serves the community through their acclaimed Singing for Seniors program, with close to 300 seniors participating annually in two separate music festivals, learning new music with a choral director, giving them an outlet for musical enrichment. Started in 2005 by the late Helen Kemp of Westminster Choir College and Dr. Lloyd, Singing for Seniors remains a very popular staple of the Choral Society’s outreach to the community. A newer program is Voices of the Future, a competition for high school choral students living in and/or who attend high school in Bucks County. The first two years of the program were funded largely through a grant from the Presser Foundation with support from the Bucks County Foundation.
Annual compensation $30-35K based on experience for 20 hours weekly; this is a contract position with no benefits.
